Palmeral of Elche
Date: February-March 2025
Course: Branding & Identity
Overseen by Becca Leffell Koren

Scope: Branding Systems, Logo Design, Research, Typography, Poster Design

Programs Used: Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop

El Palmeral de Elche is a system of date palm orchards in Elche, Spain. Palm Groves, a typical component of North African landscape, arrived in the Iberian Peninsula in the 5th Century with the Romans, but the layout and irrigation was perfected by Islamic occupation in the 10th century.

Several different concepts were proposed for this brand, including a focus on palm trees, exploring Moorish Architecture, and looking into Spanish design. Ultimately, I applied elements of Spanish tile into my wordmark, creating a ornamental and elegant logo for the site. I then continued to incorporate ideas of Spanish tile into my business cards and posters, including repetition, rotation, and ornamentation.

3 Directions

We were tasked with creating 3 different directions for our site. Through research and multiple iterations, I developed these three concepts:

Concept 1: Based on playfulness of palm trees with visual language from Arabic type

Concept 2: Based on Moorish (Muslim) Architecture, specifically the arches

Concept 3: Based on design and ornaments of Spanish Tiles

Refinement + Color

After deciding on my Spanish Tile concept, I continued to refined the workmark to improve legibility and scalability. Additionally, I began applying color to determine the color palette of the brand.

Application

Once I settled on my final wordmark, I began applying the wordmark and design system to various collateral, including square business cards and posters advertising a popular even in Elche.
