For the Children of God is a 26-pages book made to explore the relationship between being a Christian and helping those who made severe mistakes in their lives. The text in the book is from Rev. Prathia Hall’s 1998 sermon A Nightmare in Broad Daylight and Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s  1843 poem “The Cry of the Children.”

The book incorpartes themes of lights and shadows with floating echo-like typography and elements of visible versus hidden. An engraved hardcover encases the book to give it importance. It calls the audience to think about their role in helping those in need, especially the underpriviledged children described in the sermon.

Concept Planning + Type Treatment

After analyzing the two text and diving deep into researching the time period and cultural pieces related to Prathia Hall, I presented two possible directors for my book:

Concept 1:
Based on protest and social justice. Bold colors, cut out texts, and striking imagery.

Concept 2:
Based on themes of Christianity, with gold and light and the delicate but sharp details.  .

Concept Application + Image Treatment

With a lot of thought, research, and exploration of Christian theme, I landed on the concept of lights and shadows. After gathering images of shadows in nature and children in various circumstances, I began manipulating the images with effects, filters, color maps, and more. I also applied the hazy effect to call-out text and used one centered column for main body text to reflect illuminated manuscripts.

Cover Design + Binding

I wanted the book to be similar to grand and elevated book that could be placed in an ornate Church. I decided to carve and paint bookboard to create the covers. The book is perfect bound.
